Artist Statement

Curiosity compels us to explore the unknown, often without caution. This interest in investigating the mysterious pushes me to look below the surface, beyond the safety of the usual, into the abyss. Though they seem familiar at first glance, my pieces have an unexpected quality. Using recognizable forms and narrative, I invite my viewer to call into question reality. I create two primary forms, creatures and vessels, encouraging my viewer to dip into their curious nature.

I’m drawn to organic forms and working with ancient materials. My creatures are eerie and peculiar in appearance, yet they are both playful and disturbing. I use a variety of textures and the suggestion of life as well as the addition of extra appendages to encourage the viewer to look closer. There is almost always something surprising about each creature.

My vessels are a hybrid of both civilization and the natural world. They have both plant and geographical reference points, while still alluding to the man-made vessel. They are rarely functional, but often evoke the feeling of usefulness. This creates a desire, though unfulfilled, for a spontaneous engagement with the viewer.
